A wildfire continues to burn along Highway 20 near milepost 76, about five miles west of Santiam Pass, according to the Oregon Department of Transportation.
The Potato Hill Fire was reported Tuesday afternoon, Aug. 29. It is burning west of FSR 2690 and south of Highway 20 in brush and timber. Firefighters on the ground, supported by helicopters dropping water, took direct and indirect suppression actions during initial attack. Firefighters continue to evaluate potential values at risk and suppression efforts, according to the U.S. Forest Service.
ODOT has reported that one lane of the highway is open between mileposts 75 and 78, with traffic in both directions flagged with a pilot car. Travelers should expect “long delays,” according to ODOT.
The fire began on the south side of the highway Tuesday afternoon but crossed the highway and burned toward Lost Lake, prompting the closure of Highway 20.
Willamette National Forest fire crews are responding, along with air resources. The fire initially was estimated at about five acres and burning in the 2003 old B&B fire area. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
