Trail closures for Star Spangled Celebration

For the Star Spangled Celebration on the evening of Thursday, July 4, public access to the trails around Cheadle Lake will be closed 2 p.m. to midnight.

Lebanon tree farmers to host tour July 5

Linn County’s tree farmers of the year, Tim and Kathy Otis, invite the public to tour a small woodlands property at 3 p.m. Saturday, July 6, on Ingram Road, 1.2 miles up from Highway 20. Tree tour signs will guide the way.

As much as 370 acres of forest land between Lebanon and Brownsville has been managed by the same family for more than 150 years. The day’s activities include talks about the family history, and discussions about recent tree-related activities.

The Linn County chapter of the Oregon Small Woodlands Association co-hosts the annual event. Guests are asked to bring a potluck dish and service. Drinks will be supplied.

  • Arts Commission meetings start at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, June 17 and July 15, at Lebanon Public Library, 55 Academy St. Members on the commission discuss ideas the promotion of public art in Lebanon’s public spaces, including visual, literary and musical.
  • Trees and Trails Advisory Committee meetings start at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 19 and July 17, at Santiam Travel Station, 750 S. 3rd St. Members act in an advisory capacity to assist the City Council in assessing needs and planning.
  • Planning Commission meetings start at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, June 19 and July 17, at Santiam Travel Station, 750 S. 3rd St. The commission conducts public hearings on various types of development proposals, and advises the City Council on land use planning policy.

‘Brothers Grimm’ at Albany theater

Albany Civic Theater presents “The Brothers Grimm” at 7:30 p.m. June 14, 15, 21, 22, 27, 28, 29, and at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, June 23, at 111 First Ave. W., Albany.

Directed by Conner Riley, fairy tales of “The Brothers Grimm” will be turned on their heads in this fast-paced, rollicking ride as two narrators and several actors attempt to combine all 209 stories ranging from classics like “Snow White,” “Cinderella” and “Hansel and Gretel,” to more bizarre, obscure stories like “The Devil’s Grandmother” and “The Girl Without Hands.”

Theater camp to feature Seuss flavor

Auditions for Albany Civic Theater’s summer camp, featuring “Seussical Junior,” will be at 7:30 p.m. June 24-26 at 111 First Ave. W, Albany.

The camp will be July 29 to Aug. 16, and performances are Aug. 16-24. Tuition is $150. Some discounts are available.

Directed by Rebecca Douglas, the show combines Horton the Ele-phant, Cat in the Hat and other favorite Dr. Seuss characters in a fantastical musical extravaganza.

Transporting audiences from the Jungle of Nool to the Circus McGurkus, the Cat in the Hat narrates the story of Horton the Elephant, who discovers a speck of dust containing tiny people called the Whos and must protect the Whos from a world of naysayers and dangers

Golf, basketball clinics for kids

The Boys & Girls Club in Lebanon offers a golf and basketball clinic for $30.

  • Golf – Third- to sixth-grade athletes and local golf pros will meet from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesdays and Fridays, July 8 to Aug. 8, at Pineway Golf Course, 30949 Pineway Road, Lebanon. Register by June 21.
  • Basketball – Good fun and great skills training for third- to eighth-graders from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Monday to Friday, July 22 to 26, at Pioneer and BGC gyms. Register by July 12.

Linn County GOP monthly meeting

Vanessa Petro, senior faculty researcher at Oregon State University, will present research findings from studies on beavers conducted recently throughout Oregon.

The free event is sponsored by the South Santiam Watershed Council.

LAFTA campers to perform musical

Lebanon Association for Theatre Arts’ Kids Camp will put on a public performance of “Critter Capers,” a show about animal incorporating music and poetry.

The camp, which is under way, includes some 60 children who will perform at 7 p.m. on Friday, June 21, and at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 22, at Lebanon High School Auditorium.

The public is welcome. Admission is $5 per person.

Clean up relations with your pooch

Certified dog behavior consultant Caitlin Coberly will discuss the Top Ten Mistakes in Dog Training and Socialization from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 25, at Lebanon Library, 55 Academy St.

Pioneer Picnic in Brownsville

Brownsville will host its annual Linn County Pioneer Picnic June 21-23.

The event includes a flower show, on-stage entertainment, Moyer House tours and more over all three days.

Friday’s events include a kiddie parade, spelling bee and penny scramble.

Saturday’s events include the Wagon Train Breakfast, the Grand Pioneer Parade, Chicken Bar-B-Q, a horseshoe tournament, a talent show, a pie eating contest, a square dance and an antique tractor show.

Sunday’s events include a Memorial Worship Service, Logging Show and Pioneer Dam Run, along with a repeat of the breakfast and the barbecue.

Free garden plots for city residents

Through Tuesday, June 25, Lebanon residents can obtain a free community garden plot at Porter Park, 2240 Porter St., thanks to a donation from Jacob’s Ladder Tree Tech to cover 2019 growing season fees.

The community garden at the park was built by the city to give all Lebanon residents, regardless of living situation, a place to garden and promote healthy community through fresh garden-grown produce.

In addition to regular garden beds, lots available include raised stone planting beds and ADA raised cedar beds. With the garden plot comes soil, compost materials, water, basic gardening tools to use on-site and support from the Community Garden Coordinator and Master Gardener Sheryl Casteen.

Library offers summer events, performances

The Lebanon Public Library’s 2019 Summer Reading Program, “A Universe of Stories,” continues into July.

The program is open to all ages to celebrate reading. Visit the library and pick up a reading journal, use it to keep track of the minutes you read then bring the journal back to claim prizes.

Families are encouraged to sign up and read together throughout the summer. Free summer lunches will be provided for children at each event.

The schedule for June is:

  • June 20: Lego Day at 11 a.m.
  • June 27: Mad Science at 11 a.m. Be ready to be blown away with crazy science experiments! Put your goggles on and get ready for a crazy science ride. The library will host a trio of craft days, “A Universe of Crafts,” for kids ages 10-14 Tuesdays, July 9, 16 and 23 at 55 Academy St.
  • All crafts will be inspired by the library’s Summer Reading theme “A Universe of Stories.” Here is what’s coming:
  • Tuesday, July 9, from 3 to 4 p.m. –Zodiac String Art. Using wood plaques, nails, and embroidery floss, kids will create their zodiac sign in string art.
  • Tuesday, July 16, from 3 to 4 p.m. – Galaxy Pencil Pouch Workshop. Participants will paint a galaxy on a zippered pencil pouch just in time for the new school year.
  • Tuesday, July 23, from 3 to 4 p.m. – Framed Space-Themed Prints. Kids will use the sun to create framed prints using space themed objects and taste a universe of snacks! We will see how daring our teens are when they try snack foods from around the globe.

In addition to the Summer Reading Performers Series, the library will host Rain or Shine Outdoor Storytime at 10 a.m. on Tuesday mornings through Aug. 13.

Live Longer group planning meeting

The Live Longer Lebanon coalition meets from 7 to 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 26, at Samaritan Lebanon Community Hospital in conference room E, 525 Santiam Hwy.

LLL is a multi-disciplinary volunteer coalition supporting the health goals of Lebanon’s community strategic plan and exists to “help Lebanon thrive with healthier, happier lives.”

B&G Club golf tourney June 28

The Boys and Girls Club of the Greater Santiam will host Golf Palooza from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday, June 28, at Pineway Golf Course, 30949 Pineway Road.

Form a foursome, register and choose a tee time. Play early, play late. Tee times start at 7 a.m. and run through 3 p.m. Cost is $500 per foursome, which includes meals, two drink tickets and four tickets to the evening dinner and live concert. Lunch will be barbecue, with Les’s Chicken Dinner wrapping things up.

Timbers’ Joey to speak at lunch

Timber Joey of the Portland Timbers will speak at the Chamber of Commerce’s annual Forum Lunch, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, June 28, at Samaritan Lebanon Community Hospital  Training Center, 525 N. Santiam Hwy.

The lunch menu is lasagna (meat or vegetarian),  green beans, breadsticks, tossed green salad w/assorted dressings, and brownies.

Gardeners: Learn to grow own tea 

Linn County Master Gardeners will discuss “Growing Your Own Tea” at next month’s Lebanon Second Monday Lunchtime Gardening Series.

Caregivers self-care class at hospice

Samaritan Evergreen Hospice invites caregivers to a Mind-Body Medicine skills course from noon to 2 p.m. on Mondays from July 8 to Aug. 26, at 4600 Evergreen St. SE, Albany.

The series is open to anyone involved in caring for a loved one.

Each session will focus on a self-care technique proven to reduce tensions and fatigue and increase resilience, calmness and joy. Participants will discover a variety of ways to decrease feelings of hopelessness, depression and anxiety and to increase well-being, control and joy.

All discussions will be confidential, open and respectful with times to work on restoring energy. Through a supportive group of others who know well the demands of caregiving, we’ll practice ways to relax and cope with the demands of life.

Each group will start with a basic breathing meditation and a check-in. There is a short lesson, followed by time to practice together and share about everyone’s experiences. Caregivers will be able to participate at their own pace and comfort level.

J. Anna Looney, a certified CMBM facilitator and founder of Insight Journeys, LLC, will facilitate the series. Looney combines her training in social interaction and facilitation with a lifelong passion for communications, holistic health and humanism to share mind/body techniques for stress reduction and self-care.

Gumboot dancer at library July 11

The Lebanon Public Library will host world-renowned Gumboot dancer Michael Moloi, at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 11, at 55 Academy St.

Gumboot is an African dance performed by dancers wearing wellington boots. Originating in the dark gold mine tunnels of South Africa, codified boot taps were used by black miners to say something to another person a short distance away. This was used to communicate in the mines where talking was not allowed.

Following the event, free lunch will be served through the Summer Food Service Program. The Summer Food Service Program is an equal opportunity provider.

Sportsman’s fest in Sweet Home

Sweet Home will hold its annual Sportsman’s Holiday festival July 11-14.

Events include a Who’s Behind the Mask? Chips ’n’ Splinters talent show, a kiddie parade, Grand Parade, Town Festival, Logger Olympics, Movie in the Park, K-9 Jamboree, fireworks over the lake, and more.

Trails group to host bike tour

Build Lebanon Trails will host its annual Trail Tour by Bicycle from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, July 13.

The event is actually two events in one.

From 8 to 9 a.m., Pedego Bend is sponsoring free electric bicycle demos and the free use of their bikes for the tour.  The number of e-bikes is limited, so participants should come early to ensure an opportunity to try one out.
The trails ride will last from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and will cover existing and proposed segments of the Lebanon Trails System Plan. The ride will be about 18 miles long, at a moderate pace, and take about four hours.

Helmets are required. The terrain can be varied (includes grass, dirt and gravel), so bicycles with wider tires are recommended. Participants should bring water. No dogs or electronics (music, audio books) are allowed.
Meet in the south parking lot of Samaritan Lebanon Community Hospital, 525 N. Santiam Hwy. Look for the BLT signs.

‘Our Place in Space’ at library July 13

The University of Oregon’s Museum of Natural and Cultural History will present a summer program “Our Place in Space” to the Lebanon Public Library at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 13, at 55 Academy St.

Ever wonder how earth fits in among the planets, stars and galaxies? Through science experiments and other fun activities, participants can explore what makes our planet so special and learn how we can keep it that way.

This event is free and a library card is not required to attend.

Arts and crafts show in SH July 13

The Sweet Home Singing Christmas Tree will host its annual Arts and Crafts Show Saturday, July 13, during Sportsman’s Holiday, in the Sweet Home High School parking lot, 1651 Long St.

The event funds the annual free choir performances during the first full weekend of December.

Admission is free. Vendors from all over the Willamette Valley are expected to sell their wares. Food and drink will be available.

Galaxy-themed tote bag workshop 

The Lebanon Public Library will host a Crafterdark: Create Your Own Galaxy Tote Bag for adults ages 16 and older from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 16, at 55 Academy St.

Angel Ocasio will bring his Komedy 4 DA Kidz Show to the Lebanon Public Library, at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 18, at 55 Academy St.

Komedy 4 Da Kidz is a variety show full of juggling, magic and just plain silliness for all to enjoy.

‘Unexpected Guest’ on stage in Albany

Albany Civic Theater presents “The Unexpected Guest” at 7:30 p.m. July 19, 20, 25-27, Aug. 1-3, and at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, July 21, 28, at 111 First Ave. W., Albany.

Directed by Shauna Kiefiuk, the show features the story of a stranger who seeks refuge in a nearby house, only to find a man shot dead and his confused wife standing over him with a smoking gun. Police clues point to a man who died two years previously, but as the ghosts of a past wrong begin to emerge, a tangled web of lies reveals family secrets and chilling motives where the real murderer turns out to be the greatest mystery of all.

Science, craft day at library July 25

The Lebanon Library will host a Science and Craft Day at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 25, for all ages at 55 Academy St.

In keeping with the Summer Reading theme of “A Universe of Stories,” craft stations for children of all ages will be set up to create art and explore science activities.

Heart of the Valley Astronomers will be at the event for a show-and-tell of their star-gazing equipment.
