Burright memorial service scheduled Aug. 25 in Salem

A memorial service for retired Oregon State Police Sgt. John Burright will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 25, at the Salem Armory, 2310 17th St. NE.
The service is open to the public.
Burright died May 4 after what an Oregon State Police release called a “nearly 20-year battle” following a tragic Sept. 4, 2001, incident on Interstate 5 between Linn and Marion counties.
The then-41-year-old Burright was on a ride-along with Albany Police officer Jason Horeauf when they stopped to assist a disabled motorist. Oregon State Police Senior Trooper Maria Mignano, then patrolling the area, also offered help.
All three officers were then struck by a passing driver who reportedly had fallen asleep behind the wheel. Mignano and Horeauf were killed; Burright suffered injuries significant enough to force an early retirement, the Oregon State Police said.
An emergency vehicle procession from Albany to the Salem Armory will precede the service.
Anyone wishing to donate to support the Burright family may do so through the Oregon Fallen Badge Foundation either in person at any U.S. Bank location or online through the “support us” tab on the foundation’s website at www.
