Busload of children escape serious injury in crash

Linn County Sheriff’s Office invetigators are looking into a two-vehicle collision involving a school bus that occurred on Airport Road Thursday morning, May 13.
Sheriff Jim Yon said deputies responded at about 08:07 a.m. to the crash on Airport, near Denny School Road west of Lebanon, after Linn County Dispatch received a 9-1-1 report of two vehicles involved in a head-on crash.
Responders learned that Daniel Bates III, 48, of Lebanon, was driving a 2014 Mercedes Sprinter van, transporting 10 children to Central Valley Christian School, when they were struck head-on by a 1989 Nissan D21 pickup driven by Katherine Stark, 47, of Corvallis.
Stark received serious injuries and was transported by Lebanon medics to Good Samaritan Hospital in Corvallis, where she continues to receive treatment. Bates and the children, ranging in age from from 5 to 13, received minor cuts and bruising from the impact, Yon said.
“They returned to their original destination after assistance from parents and school staff.”
Deputies continue to investigate the crash and conduct interviews, he said later Thursday.
The heriff’s Office was assisted by Lebanon Fire Department, Lebanon Police Department, Albany Police Department and Linn County Road Department.
The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information related to the investigation is encouraged to contact the Linn County Sheriff’s Office at (541) 967-3950.
