Emma Bowler of East Linn Christian Academy was the second-place winner at a Santiam Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution’s “Good Citizen” awards ceremony held Friday, March 8, at a tea held at the First United Methodist Church in Lebanon.
The awards are presented annually to outstanding high school seniors demonstrating the qualities of dependability, service, leadership and patriotism.
Having been chosen by his/her respective school, each student entering the scholarship competition submits personal information pertaining to his/her service to the community, school or church and completes an essay of not more than 500 words.
The candidates were Bowler, Curtis Jones from Lebanon High School, Grant Ortiz from Scio High School and Sarah Hewitt of Sweet Home High School.
Hewitt received the first-place Chapter Award; Emma Bowler placed second, Ortiz was third and Jones received honorable mention.
As a part of the program, representatives from the American Legion, under the leadership of Larry Williams gave an informative presentation on folding of the American flag.
