Former Boys & Girls Club member helps donate $25,000

The Boys & Girls Clubs (BGC) of the Greater Santiam recently received a $25,000 donation from a company whose CEO is a familiar face, former club member Gary Daniels, now the Pacific Northwest CEO of UnitedHealthcare.

Daniels and UnitedHealthcare’s Oregon health plan provided a corporate donation of $25,000, which through a matching gift for the annual BGC fundraising auction on Oct. 21 enticed another $45,000 in donations from attendees. The $70,000 will help fund scholarships for children using BGC after-school and athletic programs.

According to a press release, Daniels grew up in the Santiam area, so it was important to him to give back to his community. In 2020, he led the charge in which UnitedHealthcare of Oregon donated $25,000 to the Wildfire Needy Kids Fund in support of Santiam Canyon, a community devastated by wildfires. Now, by donating to his childhood BGC, Daniels believes he can continue to support a community that was instrumental to his upbringing.

“It is so exciting to know that Gary was raised in a small town in the Greater Santiam area and has become a person that these kids can look up to,” BGC of the Greater Santiam CEO Casey Humphrey said. “The current members at the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Greater Santiam grew up in similar circumstances and can surely use Gary as a prime example of growing up, working hard, and achieving your goals. It’s touching that Gary still remembers his hometown and our club.”
