Free fishing derby for kids Saturday

Mid-valley youth ages 17 and under are invited to a free fishing derby from 9 a.m. until noon on Saturday, June 18, at Roaring River County Park, 42000 Fish Hatchery Drive.

Linn County Commissioner Sherrie Sprenger said all bait and tackle will be provided, plus there will be fun events including casting and knot-tying.

There will be a one-fish limit caught from temporary pools.

The Roaring River rambles through this 28-acre park providing an inviting atmosphere for anglers and picnickers. In addition to its open spaces, the park offers three large group picnic shelters, which can be reserved, hiking trails and a fishing pond.

We’re having this fishing derby to start conversations about the pond,” Sprenger said. “Come and have fun. Tell us what you think about the future of the pond.”

Linn County is partnering with the Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife on the derby, which began when Sprenger was a state representative and it was held on the Capitol lawn in Salem.

Linn County Parks & Recreation staff will be on hand to answer questions and field input about long-term park planning.
