Oktobrewfest revives German spirit

Getting ahead of the season, Conversion Brewing held its second annual “Oktobrewfest” event at Strawberry Plaza and behind the business in September on the 22nd and 23rd, featuring German party games, beer and food vendors, and live music.
Guest Don Griswold announced he had prepared for the event by doing push ups for three weeks, but, alas, it wasn’t enough to help him out-hold a full stein of beer at arm’s length. “There’s a lot of top athletes here tonight and unfortunately tonight was not my night,” he said.
The event, which unofficially replaces Growler Cafe’s Brewfest, was not only an opportunity to learn a little about German culture and wear cool outfits, but also acted as a fundraiser for the Boys & Girls Club of the Greater Santiam. This year, $2,722.50 was raised for the club.
“It’s more than just about drinking beer,” event coordinator Matt Cowart said. “It’s about having fun and being in the community, being a part of the community.”
