Public Safety for the week of May 8-13

Every individual named or referenced is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

May 13

4:53 a.m. – A caller reported his vehicle was broken into overnight in the 500 block of Tangent Street. A black Ruger LCP .380 in pocket holster was taken. A report was taken.

11:35 a.m. – A caller reported two small children running around outside with their diapers falling off and wearing no shoes in the 800 block of Morton Place. The caller took the children to the apartment and no one answered the door. The door was open and a man was asleep on the couch. When he woke up he took one of the children out of the caller’s arms.

An officer spoke with the man who said he got up extra early to make his wife breakfast for a special Mother’s Day. He said she leaves early for work. He fell asleep on the couch and his 4-year-old child was able to unlock the door. This became evident as she quickly shut the door and briefly locked out her father and the responding officer.

The man let the officer in the house and the officer saw several baby gates and a lock installed high on the door. However, the man learned that day that 4-year-old learned how to stand on a small table and unlock it. An officer counseled the man on the dangers of small children being outside. The officer thought the man learned from this incident and will take steps to avoid this in the future. No report was taken.

2:01 p.m. – Brenna Rae Candler, 37, was arrested on a Lebanon Municipal Court warrant for contempt of court and probation violation.

5:32 p.m. – A caller reported $250 cash, two watches and a bag of marijuana missing in the 300 block in the S. Seventh Street. A report was taken.

May 11

1:13 p.m. – A Lebanon High School administrator reported that a 16-year-old male student confronted another male student because of a rumor that the second student assaulted his girlfriend. The second student refused to talk to the first student about it. The administrator said the first student waited in the hall for the second and punched him in the head and pushed him into a locker. They were separated until fifth period when the first student confronted the second again. The second student told him “F*** you.” Then the first student punched him again and pushed him into the wall. The 16-year-old student was referred for second-degree disorderly conduct  A report was taken.

4:20 p.m. – Stephen Layne Elam, 59, was arrested on a Lebanon Municipal Court warrant for contempt of court and probation violation. He also had a Lebanon Justice Court warrant for failure to appear.

6:36 p.m. – Matthew Joseph Whiting, 41, was arrested on a Marion County felony warrant for ID theft. He also had two Albany Municipal Court warrants for failure to appear, original charges false information to police, second-degree theft and third-degree theft. He had Marion County warrants for second-degree theft and parole violation. Whiting had additional charges for second-degree theft, false information to an officer and first-degree criminal trespass.

7:01 p.m. – Ivan Rosalio Mendez Perez, 24, was arrested for DUII. He also was charged with reckless endangering, providing false information and driving uninsured. BAC .14.

May 10

6:33 a.m. – A caller reported the drive-thru window was broken into sometime overnight at Burger King, 2095 S. Santiam Hwy. Surveillance video showed a male enter the building just before 2 a.m. Two tills also were damaged. Nothing was believed to have been stolen. A report for second-degree burglary was taken.

8:42 a.m. – A Samaritan Lebanon Community Hospital employee reported a bong and crystal methamphetamine was found in one of the triage rooms. It was was unknown where it came from. A report was taken.

8:28 p.m. – Kyle Andrew Metzger, 28, was arrested on an Albany Municipal Court warrant for failure to appear, original charge third-degree theft.

11:06 p.m. – Darrell Gene Mullenix, 43, was arrested on a Lebanon Municipal Court warrant for contempt of court and probation violation.

May 9

7:03 a.m. – A firearm that was listed as stolen was in the pawn entries at Fast Cash, 3055 S. Santiam Highway. The gun was listed as stolen out of the King County Sheriff’s Office. A report was taken.

4:40 p.m. – Tashina Nicole Hickman, 33, was arrested on a Linn County Circuit Court warrant for unauthorized use of a vehicle. She was cited and released.

4:53 p.m. – Daniel Austin Pope, 24, was arrested on a Lebanon Municipal Court warrant for contempt of court and probation violation, original charge third-degree theft. He also had a Linn County Circuit Court misdemeanor warrant for failure to appear, original charge disorderly conduct.

5:46 p.m. – Kyle Alexander Richards, 24, was arrested on a Sweet Home Municipal Court warrant for second-degree failure to appear, original charge second-degree theft. He also had a statewide felony warrant for failure to appear, original charge probation violation, possession of a controlled substance, methamphetamine.

6:37 p.m. – Michael John Mays, 49, was arrested for disorderly conduct. A caller reported a man with a knife  at Walmart, 3290 S. Santiam Hwy. He was reportedly threatening to slit people’s throats. Three people complained to Walmart staff and a fourth flagged down an officer. A report was taken.

8:11 p.m. – A caller reported her black Beach Cruiser was stolen from the 1000 block of Hiatt Street. The bike had a  baby seat on the back. Loss value: $400. A report was taken.

11:19 p.m. – Victor Lawrence Sells, 45, was arrested on a Linn County Sheriff’s Office warrant for failure to comply, original charge second-degree theft. He also had a Benton County felony warrant for two counts of possession of methamphetamine.

May 8

8:10 a.m. – Joseph Robert Vargas, 33, was arrested on an Oregon State Parole Board warrant.

A caller reported a man trying to rip a backpack off a woman near E. Grant and S. Williams Streets. The man ran toward Cleveland Street and was seen with a black backpack. He ditched a white bike. Another caller said a man was hiding in the bushes in his backyard in the 900 block of Cleveland Street. Officers detained Vargas. A report was taken.

9:59 a.m. – A caller reported his vehicle stolen from a gated front yard in the 800 block of S. 15th Street. The 80CC Suzuki DS80 was spray painted blue with some green showing through. A report was taken.

12:08 p.m. – A 30-year-old man accidentally shot himself in the leg. He was going to clean his pistol but did not clear it first. He was sitting on his bed and the pistol fired a single round into his calf. When officers arrived, the man had pressure on the wound and the bleeding was under control. His laptop was open on his bed and an officer could see that the man had searched for gun cleaning tips. Medics transported him to Samaritan Lebanon Community Hospital. No report was taken.
