Nora Horne of Riverview School shows off her award after winning the Division I (Grades 1-5) competition in the Linn County Spelling Contest held May 17. Top spellers from schools throughout the county participated. The Division II winner (Grades 6-8) was Paige Rogers from Memorial Middle School in Albany. The Division III (high school) winner was Kate Looney from West Albany High School. Nora and other winners are eligible to progress to the Oregon Statewide Spelling Championship, to be held from 10 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Sept. 1 at the Oregon State Fair in Salem. The competition will be held in the Picnic Grove. Winners of the Oregon Statewide Spelling Championship are awarded cash prizes. All State Fair attendees are invited, however, to the “just for fun” verbal “Bee at the Fair,” in Columbia Hall. The Junior Division (12 and under) starts at 2:30 p.m. and the Teen/Adult Division starts at 3:30 p.m. Inquiries about how to qualify students to participate in next year’s Linn County Spelling Contest can be directed to Kaynor Heineck at [email protected].
