Woman arrested for assault – with car

Melissa Louise Bennett, 35, of Vida, is charged with second-degree assault in connection with a vehicle-versus-pedestrian crash in Lebanon on Oct. 8.

Lebanon Police officers responded to two calls about the crash in the Walmart parking lot at 5:05 p.m. on Oct. 8.

According to the callers, the driver of the vehicle ran over a pedestrian, later identified as Derrick James Freeman, 21, of Vida. Freeman is Bennett’s brother, according to an LPD news release.

Bennett “appeared to be attempting to leave the scene,” according to the release.

Officers arrived as medics arrived to treat Freeman.

The investigation revealed that an altercation had occurred between Bennett and Freeman.

Freeman was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries, according the release.

Department of Human Services staff was called to assist, as there were two minor children in the vehicle at the time of the altercation.

Bennett was arraigned on Oct. 9. Her next court hearing is scheduled for Oct. 26.
